1.INDEPTH welcomes 4 new members!

 

The Executive Director recently extended a hearty welcome to the following new members whose applications for full membership received an overall positive review by the Board of Trustees. The sites have in turn accepted the offer of membership. Brief site introductions of the new members have been posted on the web.

2. INDEPTH Cause of Death/MTIMBA meeting ends in Ho, Ghana.

 

The INDEPTH Cause of Death Working Group and the MTIMBA group concluded a successful 3-day meeting on 23rd October, 2003 in the Ghanaian city of Ho to deliberate on cross-site cause of death data collection and analysis and plan for the future. 15 participants attended from the following INDEPTH sites: Rakai, Kisumu, Africa Centre, Ifakara and Rufiji. Others were from WHO/RBM, WHO/TDR and CDC, Atlanta, as well as Prof. Fred Binka (INDEPTH Secretariat).

 

 

3. INDEPTH Analysis Workshop ends in Nairobi, Kenya.

 

An INDEPTH Analysis workshop (27-31 October) on Multilevel Modeling for DSS and Cross-sectional survey data has successfully ended in Nairobi, Kenya with 17 INDEPTH sites participating. For the INDEPTH Analysis Working Group, the organisation of the workshop was led by Dr. Eliya Zulu of the African Population and Health Research Centre (APHRC, which operates Nairobi DSS). APHRC hosted the workshop.

 

The main objectives of the workshop were to:

·         Provide a practical introduction to multilevel modelling for demographic surveillance data and cross-sectional survey data.

·         Enable participants to analyse their own hierarchical data using relevant software.

 

The course was designed primarily for researches in DSS sites who are involved in the analysis of DSS data. Participants were instructed in multilevel modeling concepts and analysis using the MLwiN software.

 

 

4. INDEPTH Adult Health and Aging Workshop ends in Johannesburg, South Africa.

 

An INDEPTH Adult Health and Aging - Building the INDEPTH Platform workshop was held in Johannesburg, South Africa from 29th October to 1st November. The workshop was hosted by the Agincourt Health and Population Unit, Health and Population Division, School of Public Health, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa.

 

For the INDEPTH Adult Health and Aging Group, the workshop was organised by Steve Tollman (Agincourt), Peter Byass (Butajira), Kathy Kahn and Dereshni Ramnarain (Agincourt), Jane Doherty (consultant).

 

The objectives of the workshop were to:

  • Take stock of ongoing work in Adult Health and Aging at INDEPTH sites, through site presentations and a Network audit

  • Work with an expert team to develop promising research directions and plan for development of a multi-site grant proposal

  • Formulat core and optional ‘INDEPTH Adult Health modules’ for rapid introduction into a sub-group of INDEPTH sites – and potential extension across the Network.

 

The Goal of the INDEPTH Adult Health initiative is:

“To establish INDEPTH’s capability to contribute critical insights into the adult health, aging and disease transitions evolving in Africa and Asia, and to use this understanding to evaluate interventions of potentially high impact”
