Goal

The goal of the Alliance is to facilitate site preparation for the effective conduct of clinical trials for life-saving malaria interventions and simultaneously promote the long term development and sustainability of clinical trial sites in resource-constrained countries in the developing world.

Objectives

Objective 1:

To facilitate the development of sufficient near-term capacity in Africa to conduct GCP clinical trials for malaria vaccine and drug interventions.

     The expected outcomes under this objective are as follows:

a) Ensure the readiness of up to 8 sites associated with MVI RTS,S trials; and

b) Ensure the readiness of 10 sites associated with MMV to test malaria drugs. (4 of these sites are involved in the MVI RTS,S trials.)

Objective 2:

To support, strengthen, mentor and network trial sites to facilitate their progression toward self-sustaining clinical research centers.

    The expected outcomes of this objective are as follows:

a)  Governance structures implemented at all trial sites that enable the sites to interact with the ministries of health, public private partnerships as well as pharmaceutical industry representatives;

b)  Sites have leaders who are capable of managing trials, competing for, receiving and managing funds, building research teams, and communicating with policy-makers and ministries of health;

c)  Well trained staff to conduct GCP vaccine and drug trials in malaria at all times; and

d)  Sites effectively networked to create a learning laboratory of training tools, documents, and problem solving etc to hasten their development.

KEY ACTIVITIES TO BE CARRIED OUT

Activity 1: The first activity will involve the establishment of the Alliance Secretariat and staff recruitment.

Activity 2: The second activity is guiding site infrastructure for the conduct of Good Clinical Practices (GCP) malaria drug and vaccine trials.

Activity 3:  The third activity will be promoting networking between sites.

Activity 4:  General GCP Training.

Activity 5: General assistance to sites.

Activity 6: Training for long-term sustainability.
