Farafenni DSS, Gambia
Objectives Since October 1981 MRC has maintained the Farafenni DSS as a surveillance site for both demographic and health data. At its inception, the primary objective of the project was to monitor the impact of the Gambian PHC program on outcomes of pregnancy and child survival. Surveillance of births and deaths began in April 1982, after the completion of the original census. The 16 larger villages of the area joined the PHC program in early 1983. Another MRC objective was to monitor malaria morbidity and mortality within the area and consider ways to link malaria interventions with the PHC program. The site has been used to answer a range of scientific questions, and a search of the literature using the names of the main investigators quickly reveals more than 100 published papers and reports.
