INDEPTH - DSS UNIVERSITIES: SHORT TERM FELLOWSHIPS
Funded projects
1.Is there any relationship between mortality clustering and malaria transmission in Ghana?
This proposal seeks to examine the relationship between the spatial distribution of mortality and malaria transmission in two districts in Ghana -- the Kasena-Nankana district in northern Ghana, and the Kintampo north and south districts in the middle belt of Ghana. These districts are endemic in malaria and are home to two of the three demographic surveillance sites in Ghana. The specific objectives of the study are to:
The study is currently ongoing. The work is being carried out under the Hewlett-funded DSS-university collaboration.
2. Clustering Analysis of Child and Adult Mortality at INDEPTH Sites in Ghana This study is collaboration among the three HDSS sites in Ghana - Navrongo, Dodowa and Kintampo. The work is being carried out under the Hewlett-funded DSS-university collaboration.
Specific Objective The study examines the child and adult mortality and mortality clustering at the participating DSS sites in Ghana over a 10 year. In addition to its substantive focus, it aims to as an exploratory, technology transfer and capacity building initiative.
3. DSS-University networking and capacity building: a partnership between Dodowa Demographic Surveillance site and the Regional Institute for Population Studies. The general objective is to promote networking and build capacity among senior staff, researchers and students at the Dodowa DSS site and the University of Ghana Regional Institute for Population Studies (RIPS).
Specific Objectives
4. Collaboration between Centre for Actuarial Research (CARe) and the Dikgale DSS, South Africa
This project aims to establish collaborative links between the two institutions and through that vehicle explore many years of unanalyzed data collected at the Dikgale DSS in the Limpopo Province of South Africa.
During the course of the grant period, scholars and students of the University of Cape Town Centre for Actuarial Research will visit and spend extended periods of time at the Dikgale DSS site to help work on the data and to offer opportunities for resident researchers at the site to tap on the technical and analytical expertise of the visiting scholars to increase the utility of the data. It will also offer opportunities to train students on analysis of longitudinal data.
